1) MESSAGE FROM AFGHANISTAN: END THE WAR NOW

The attack on British Council office in Kabul has forced to the top of the news agendas -- recently dominated by the UK riots and the collapsing world economy -- the war they cannot hide.

As the BBC correspondent reported, it shows that the Taliban and other resistance forces can strike anywhere in Afghanistan, disproving once again the mantra from Obama, Cameron and their generals that the "insurgency" is being progressively defeated and security and stability are returning to the country.

It was never more urgent that the voice of Britain's anti-war majority raises its voice to say not one more death in our name: bring the troops home now.

As Lindsey German, national convenor of Stop the War, says: "The bomb which ripped through the British Council building in Kabul came with a clear message: the troops must be withdrawn, and Afghanistan must once again have independence from the British and US empires."

We simply cannot allow the government to get away with spending £5 billion a year on a war that is clearly lost -- and was never justified -- while it is implementing cuts in public services that will -- to give just one example -- make thousands of
disabled people homeless.

This is why local Stop the War groups and activists across Britain will on Saturday 20 August be holding an Afghanistan Day of Action to collect pledges from people to be at the Anti-War Mass Assembly in Trafalgar Square on 8 October.

Recent pledges for 8 October include former UK ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray, Greg Muttitt, author of the acclaimed book on Iraq, Fuel on the Fire, and Zita Holbourne, PCS union national executive.

If you haven't pledged yet to be in Trafalgar Square on October 8, we urge you to sign now. This is one of the most important events Stop the War has organised in our ten year history, in conjunction with CND and the British Muslim Initiative.
